Detweiler Meetinghouse, Roseville - Preservation
The Detweiler Meetinghouse represents the only Mennonite settlement in the Township of Dumfries. Its members came from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and were the original pioneer settlers of the southern part of the Region. The Detweiler Meetinghouse is the only meetinghouse remaining in North Dumfries and the only remaining stone Mennonite meetinghouse in Ontario. A dedicated committee from the Region of Waterloo was formed with the initiative of preserving this building. Beside it is an old cemetery where many of the first families to settle in this area are buried. You will note in the foreground the old tombstones. This cemetery is very well kept in perpetuity and remains in use by the community. The building is available to rent for small gatherings such as weddings, concerts or meetings. The meetinghouse also shows the talent of craftsmen in Waterloo Region who are experienced in the restoration process.
